The Baseload Power Predicament

Sonal Patel - Associate Editor, POWER Magazine, Houston TX

Thursday, May 18th

Baseload power from coal-fired and nuclear generators are exiting wholesale power markets across the country, owing primarily to low natural gas prices, regulatory concerns, capital costs, transmission woes, and a general influx of renewables. This trend shows no signs of abating. Natural gas–fired plants are also now at risk of closure. Reliability concerns have spurred legislative and regulatory measures in New York and Illinois, and potential actions are brewing in a number of other states. This presentation will provide an overview of the baseload exit trend, its implications for reliability, and discuss what lies ahead. Sonal Patel is an associate editor for POWER magazine, a 135-year-old publication for power generation professionals worldwide. She covers U.S. and international technology and business trends and has a keen interest in energy and environmental policy, regulation, and markets. She received a national Azbee Award of Excellence in 2011 for a POWER series analyzing energy transitions around the world and was a Jesse H. Neal Award finalist for specialized journalism in 2014. She earned her bachelor’s degree in Journalism from the University of Houston.

3D Manufacturing Lab Update

We have postposed our competition for this year due to some difficulties with purchasing the materials and other issues, but we are continuing to work toward developing a future curriculum around the 3D Manufacturing Lab.  We still need volunteers and are working with Alief ISD to bring the quadcopter competition to fruition in December. If you interested in 3D manufacturing, we need your help as a mentor for our Quadcopter Competition.  This is a tremendous opportunity to learn Project Management and supervisory skills as we need engineers to work with High School students in designing and building quadcopters.  If you have an interest in this cutting-edge technology, we want you!  Work on the quadcopters will be in the late afternoon and on weekends and we will work with your work schedule.

If you are interested in being a part of this exciting and educational opportunity, please contact George Rissky or Stephen Vasconi via email.

Keep Yourself Informed!

We are updating our calendars and have confirmed speakers for the December and May meetings.   You can always download the ASME South Texas Calendar directly to your Outlook Calendar at work or home.  We even have a Google Calendar version you can view online.  Impress your co-workers and friends with your instant knowledge of all our meetings and events – download the calendar today!

We Always have a Home for Your Magazines!

We are approaching the end of the meetings for the year and there are only two opportunities left!  ASME South Texas supports High School STEM education through the distribution of Mechanical Engineering Magazines and other technical periodicals.  This program is one of the most popular in the area, as the magazines help inspire future engineers.  Your magazines will make a real difference by helping students reach their potential as future engineers!  Bring those magazines to our next meeting in April, or any of our meetings throughout the year.
